New custom columns confused about type

Hi, about a week ago it seems that when I add a new custom column in Power Query it's defaulting as a VarChar type when the values are and always have been numbers. So it means I'm needing to add additional steps to transform the column to a decimal number.

What could be causing this?

Excel Facts

Round to nearest half hour?
Use =MROUND(A2,"0:30") to round to nearest half hour. Use =CEILING(A2,"0:30") to round to next half hour.
That's just default, you can expressly define the data type when adding the column.

ThisStep = Table.AddColumn(PreviousStep, "New Column", each 0.01, type number)
