why first 3 days returns 2 instead of 1

I have attached a screenshot. the formula for the calculated field is above the pivot table. Can someone tell me why this formula returns 2 for the first 3 days of Mar 2009? The data model sitting behind is simple, just one date table with dates from 1 Jan 09 to 31 Jan 11
