Last year Microsoft did a security update that affected Microsoft Office 2993 User
Most of those people using my spreadsheets now get this message when they open the spreadsheet.
Office File Validation WARNING: Office File Validation detected a problem while trying to open this file. It is suggesting that there may be malicious code in the file.
I found the following information online:
Solution: You must create the registry key to disable validation (this fix is easy!)
To prevent Office File Validation from validating files you must create the following registry key (all
the solutions online never said I had to create a key... they said go to it...duh) and assign it a value of “0
” for the specified application in Office 2003 or Office 2007:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\<11.0 or 12.0
>\<application>\Security\FileValidation, where <11.0 or 12.0> represents the version of Office and where
<application> represents the specific Office application for which Office File Validation is installed, such
as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
This is simple... really! Here's how:
Exit Excel
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0 or 12.0\
Click on the version number to highlight it
On the menu, click Edit, New and then click Key.
Type Excel, and then press ENTER.
Select Excel, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click Key.
Type Security, and then press ENTER.
Select Security, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click Key.
Type FileValidation (Note there are no spaces between the words), and then press ENTER.
Select FileValidation, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
Type Enable****** (again... no spaces), and then press ENTER.
Note: The default value is 0 which disables the validation.
On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
Here's the documentation from MS...
Make a registry key to disable the validation.
Office File Validation for Office 2003 and Office 2007
Ok so this solution may work on one system that I control but its not easy for unfamiliar users who need an easer solution. Doe anyone know of an install or small program to pass on to my users who can run the program and it takes care of doing all this for them so they no longer have to deal with this annoying message?
