Is there any way to have manual calculation be on by default? Would this go in the personal.xls file in a macro that runs when the file opens? I have a colleague that loses a lot of time waiting for some huge spreadsheets to update and gets frustrated with it.

Excel Facts

Using Function Arguments with nested formulas
If writing INDEX in Func. Arguments, type MATCH(. Use the mouse to click inside MATCH in the formula bar. Dialog switches to MATCH.
The way I do it is to set it to manual in Book.xlt, that forms the basis for the blank workbook you get when you start Excel.

My friend has lots of files that he's inherited. He has a good machine (dual processor with 2.5GB of ram) for no reason since excel 2000 will crash long before his machine even starts to warm up. Is there any way to force an old file (that you've never opened before) to open in "manual" mode just to make sure that whatever problems might exist won't bring everything to a halt before he ever gets to look at the file?

A couple of notes on calculation:

(1) All subsequently opened files will open at the current calculation setting

(2) Calculation settings are stored with the workbook. If you save a workbook as manual, it will open as manual. However, this is secondary to item (1) above.

(3) Since new workbooks in Excel default to automatic calculation (unless you change Book.xls as Andrew suggested), and Excel opens a new workbook upon startup (unless you change the setting), closing Book1 or whatever Excel defaulted to on startup BEFORE opening any files is a good way to ensure the calculation setting as in (2).
