Hello All,
I have done a search for this solution. I have not found it. I have a list that has 100 names in it listed in cell A1 thru A100, alot of them are repeated. I would like to come up with a unique list. I have tried Advanced Filtering with checking the Unique Item check box, that does not work. Please help.

Thanks,
Yodzak

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
Is this repeatable or not?? If you are doing this as a one off...One method (no doubt there are hundreds) that I use.

1. Sort the data.
2. In cell B2 put the formula =if(A2=A1,m,"") 'note the m can be anything here is is (hopefully a non used named range thereby returning errors for a match
3. copy down to B100
4. Edit --> goto, special, formulas, errors
5. Edit --> delete --> entire row

Voila,

Any good to you?

Advanced filtering is not intuitive. Here is how I use advanced filtering to get a unique list:

1. Make sure that your column of names has a header (insert a row or cell above your list and add a title "Names" in cell A1).
2. Copy the title into cells b1 and C1.
3. Go to Data/Filter/Advanced Filter.
4. Under "Action" choose "copy to another location"
5. The list range is A1:A101
6. The criteria range is B1:B2
7. The copy to range is C1
8. Make sure to check "Unique records only"
9. Hit OK.

You should now have a unique list of names in column C.

Note, you can choose different criteria and copy to ranges, but remember to make sure they all have the same header cell info and that the criteria range includes two cells: the header and an empty cell.
