Hi,

I expect this is an egg on face question, and I have searched and the board for a solution.

How can I alter the default background colour of a worksheet so that when I open a new file the background (all cells) will be, say, very light grey?

I don't want to select all and then force the colour.

I was hoping it would be a selectable option but I can't find it.

If not is there code that can do it.

thanks kade

Can Excel fill bagel flavors?
You can teach Excel a new custom list. Type the list in cells, File, Options, Advanced, Edit Custom Lists, Import, OK
Some solutions,

the first one is more drastic. You can change the "Window background" color in the Display settings.

two, you can create a new template, called Book.xlt, with the green background.

three... mmhmm, maybe, a macro in the Personal.xls workbook, or in an addin that loads on startup that has application events enabled, checking for every new workbook.

thanks Juan,

The first option, I assume you mean the complete windows default not just excel?. A bit to drastic for me, and as this file is distributed to others it wouldn't work on their computers

The second, I assume you mean select all cells, apply the colour and save as a xlt (tried this but causes probs in the default pring range)

I was hoping it could be achieved so that when I selected "no fill" on cell colour it would show the selected shade.

I do not have the skills to embark on your third option

Perhaps my needs are a bit fussy ~~

If you're OK with an .xlt solution, how about this:

1) Open MS paint or equivalent
2) Create a picture with just the colour you want (simple with the 'fill with colour' option
3) save picture.
4) In excel, open new file
5) Format | sheet | Background - select your file
6) Save as .xlt

Paddy you are a genius!
This does exactly what I want

Follow up Q.
no need to reply if no answer, but I was curious if it was possible for later inserted sheets to automatically have this background formatting?

No big deal as I can easily get round it by move /copy sheet when I need extra sheets. Just curious if the insert sheet can be pre formatted.

I understand that code could do the job somehow but this would not be warranted.

anyhow thanks again Paddy

I think there are Sheet templates also?? SO when the user inserst another sheet the option is there to insert your template. Look in Help under "Sheet Template".
