I have XL 2007 running on XP and when I try to open any file in XL I get this error.

Excel cannot open the file 'abcd.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify the file had not been corrupted and the file extesion matches the format of the file.

Excel Facts

Shade all formula cells
To shade all formula cells: Home, Find & Select, Formulas to select all formulas. Then apply a light fill color.
Does it always mention abcd.xlsx or is that a generic name substitution that you made?

If the former and if you are trying to open the file by double-clicking it, check the Excel Startup folder. It probably has a file abcd.xlsx that is corrupt. Move it out of the Startup folder and then try again.
