Is it possible to write formulas to perform a "fuzzy lookup" without installing the addin?

E.g. I have 2 columns with partial matches in the middle of each description, but varying numbers and texts before and after.

Excel Facts

Select a hidden cell
Somehide hide payroll data in column G? Press F5. Type G1. Enter. Look in formula bar while you arrow down through G.
you could try the FIND function, which will return the starting position of a word/character.
So, for example, if in A1 I have "Is this a test" and in B1 I put =FIND(" a ",A1,1), it will return 8

Not every cell will be the same though. Such as searching for "a" in your example.
