Getting pivot tables to count blank cells

Our data sets have many cells with no values in and the pivot tables I create don't automatically count these cells. How can I get my pivot tables to count blanks cells? I have noted that when I produce a pivot table a column called (blank) with nothing in it is always created...

Links? Where??
If Excel says you have links but you can't find them, go to Formulas, Name Manager. Look for old links to dead workbooks & delete.
You could select your blank cells and Control+Enter ="" into them. Blank cells can be selected using the Edit | Go To... [ Special...] Blanks menu command.
