Hi
I was reading one of Mike Girvin's document and he said the following:
++
Accounting Number Format:
Fixed dollar sign (left edge of cell).
Negatives are in parenthesis.
Zeros are dashes.
Decimals always line up.

Currency:
Floating dollar sign.
You choose how to show negatives.
Zeros are zeros.
Decimals usually line up.

I formatted 2 cells (General-->) one as currency and one as accounting. in Accounting cell, why I type -100, excel will not insert Parenthesis!!

Excel Facts

Format cells as currency
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+4 to format cells as currency. (Shift 4 is the $ sign).
It will depend on how your default formats are set in Regional options in Control Panel in Windows.

Thanks for your reply. I went to control panel-->region-->more settings. and I changed the negative number from -1.1 to (1.1) then reboot and then formatted the cell to accounting and to currency and tried to use -100 but I got -$100 in both cases, again no parenthesis. Thank you again.

you can make a custom number format but i dont know how to change the default accounting format to have parenthesis. i feel like mike was wrong when he said accounting is meant to have negatives in parenthesis or maybe it's for an old excel version or something

for a custom number format you can use
_-$* #,##0.00_-;-$* (#,##0.00)_-;_-$* "-"??_-;_-@_-
that will display -100 as -$(100.00)
if you dont want the minus sign and just have parenthesis for negatives you can use
_-$* #,##0.00_-;$* (#,##0.00)_-;_-$* "-"??_-;_-@_-
that will display -100 as $(100.00)

Did you change the negative format on the Currency tab too?
