Conditional Formatting Leaving Borders Behind

Hi,

I'm using conditional formatting and for all of the ones I have used (equal to and contains) when i removed the text it leaves behind a half border like so:

It stays there unless I go into the formula line and press enter. I would like it if it doesn't do that. Does anyone have any tips?
