Count unique items in one column based on another column's value

Hello!

I'm trying to write a formula (to no avail) which will return the number of unique counties in a given region. This formula will be on another sheet, but I usually do not have trouble referencing another sheet in a formula. The sheet with my data is 'Master List' and the other is 'Dashboard'.

My data is from row 2 to row 163, and the (columns) headers are: (a) ID, (b) Region, (c) County, etc. ID is just a key value for me to keep it organized the way I entered it, so it can be completely disregarded. B&C are my focus. By the way, I have named the ranges to try to keep my formulas clean. The header names match the labels (ID, Region, County, etc).

I pasted some of the data below, and in that sample Region 1 should return 4, Region 2=3, Region3=5, etc. There are 162 total number of rows, and I know that there are only 68 unique counties overall, but we are 're-districting' and I need something that will update automatically as region numbers change.

Amazing! This works for every region except 6 in my actual workbook. In that one, its either one or two off (which then throws my sum off 1 or 2). I know it would be too large to copy here, but I counted myself and checked for typos, etc. There should be 15 in Region 6 according to my triple-checked hand count. Any idea why it would get all the other regions right?

Try this in F2 and copy down...

=SUM(IF(FREQUENCY(IF(REG=E2,MATCH(County,County,0)),ROW(REG)[COLOR="Red"]-1[/COLOR])>0,1))

The minus 1 is to offset the row number of the 1st cell in REG. So if the row number of the 1st cell in REG is 2, then 2-1=1 which is what is needed in the case. If the 1st cell in REG was say row 4, then minus three is needed (4-3= 1)

The MATCH function returns an array of numbers from 1 to n.

We need ROW(Reg) to also return an array of numbers from 1 to n. That's where the "offset correction" comes into play.

Let's assume the named range Reg is A2:A6.

So, we need to somehow convert A2:A6 to 1,2,3,4,5.

The easiest most intuitive way to do that is:

ROW(Reg)-MIN(ROW(Reg))+1

If you're using range addresses instead of defined named ranges then it would be:

ROW(A2:A6)-ROW(A2)+1
