Does anyone know why Microsoft has built Excel to where if sosmeone opens a file in read only, why I cannot open the file in edit mode?

This is really frustrating, I need to edit the file and if I am not the first one to open the file, then I am not able to edit it and i have to go track down whoever has it open.

It would seem to me that if the file is open in read only, I should still be able to edit my own file.

Excel Facts

Return population for a City
If you have a list of cities in A2:A100, use Data, Geography. Then =A2.Population and copy down.

NOT SERRY BOB YOU MAY NOT! MY EDITS ARE MORE IMPORTANT!

Chris, this is by design. Excel is not meant to be a shared resource. You may want to open the file in read only mode and the save a copy of it and do your own thing in a copy on your own.

It seems to me that colaborative mode is something you want to investigate.

Or worts some VBA Code to incorporate all the changes all your colleagues will do. Not worth it IMHO.

By the way this has nothing to do with security. I would rather have an honest subject so that we can address your inquiries properly.
