for a list of numbers in fixed decimal format I need to get the exponent and mantissa of the maximum value in scientific format so that I can calculate a scale for a chart in VBA. Either a function or VBA would be OK

Excel Facts

Select a hidden cell
Somehide hide payroll data in column G? Press F5. Type G1. Enter. Look in formula bar while you arrow down through G.
Hi Barfbagger,

Say for example your number is in cell B4. To get the exponent:

=INT(LOG(B4))

Let's now say that this formula is in cell C4. Then to get the mantissa:

=B4/10^C4
