I have been trying to figure this out all day:
I am building a dashboard, and I have everything in a summary tab (in a table) to pull for pivots. The dates do not seem to be recognized as dates when I try to use a pivot to group by date.
I have tried text to columns, and formatting cells. I have tried helper cells as well. Some rows are intentionally not populating a date because we haven't sold it yet, so there is no sale date. PLEASE help me figure this out.
I'm using 365

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.
Sounds like you've figures it out yourself.
AFAIK the behavior is if every cell has a date, the pivot table identifies them as dates.
When not all cells are dates - such as the ones that haven't sold yet - then the pivot table does not.
I guess that means, if you want the pivot table to handle all as dates, enter a date for the ones that haven't sold yet.

Thanks!! I just put in helper cells to get a true blank cell, and when it came in to my pivot it was showing only the month. Finally realized I just needed to group it! That was driving me crazy!
