I have a list of words in row 3 across a number of columns. In row 4 I have a list of values in the same columns. I would like to have a function were I take the max value for a given word, something like MaxIf(A3:A7,"Old","A4:A7). Any ideas?

Excel Facts

Control Word Wrap
Press Alt+Enter to move to a new row in a cell. Lets you control where the words wrap.

I think you made a typo in the references ?

Anyway, try this array entered (As in with Control Shift Enter, not just Enter)

=MAX(IF(A3:G3="Old",A4:G4))
