I have names in a table listed multiple times and I want to create a formula that numbers each one and starts over numbering when the name changes.

name1 1
name1 2
name1 3
name1 4
name1 5
name2 1
name2 2
name2 3
name2 4
name3 1
name3 2

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
Hi there.

Assuming your data is in column A, put 1 in cell B1, and then this formula in cell B2 and copy down: =IF(A2=A1,B1+1,1)
