Why would a post be marked "Not open for further replies"?

I encountered a post that was unanswered but it was not answerable and it was marked "Not open for further replies." Why would that happen?
 
Possibly a duplicate post or a post that involves cracking passwords that has been blocked by a moderator, although they normally give a reason in the post.
A bit difficult to say without a link to the post.

I normally see messages like that on Stack Overflow rather than here

Duplicate question is definitely the most common reason. Although it was not the case in the thread you linked to, the reason is mostly found within the thread.
For example, see post #5 in this thread.
