What is the use of a + sign before a formula begins? For eg, +IF, etc

Thanks.

Spell Check in Excel
Press F7 to start spell check in Excel. Be careful, by default, Excel does not check Capitalized Werds (whoops)
Did a quick search and it looks like it's used for capatability with Lotus and functions the same as using "=".

In addition to the old school Lotus reasons, some people prefer the + (to =) because it's on the number pad. If you're keying in numbers and need to add two together, it's marginally quicker to just use "+1234+5678" instead of "=1234+5678" or whatever.

Then for them it would be quicker than marginally quicker to first click on Tools > Options > Transition tab, select "Transition formula entry", and now they can skip the first character press altogether, be it a "+" or "=", and simply enter the numbers and intervening operators:
"1234+4568"
which would enter the formula to return 6912.

A preceding "=" would still be placed automatically in the formula but if it was entry speed they were after, they could set that Transition option for one less character keypress.
