Hi,

I am aware of how to add a label to a column chart for example if we want to show totals for each column.
This would be done by selecting a column, right clicking and clicking on Add data labels.

My question is can I add another series of labels to columns on top of first one?

So for example I could have totals on top of column and then add an extra set of labels which contain the name of each column (eg. product 1, product 2 etc.).

I can obviously insert manually a text in each column but this is a very manual solution and also as the columns vary in size/height the text would be no longer in place and would need further manual adjustments.

How can I do this?

Thanks,
Nic

Excel Facts

Difference between two dates
Secret function! Use =DATEDIF(A2,B2,"Y")&" years"&=DATEDIF(A2,B2,"YM")&" months"&=DATEDIF(A2,B2,"MD")&" days"
See if this will give you what you want.
1. Right click an existing data label
2. Select Format Data Labels
3. Under Label Options/Label Contains check the box Value From Cells
4. The Data Label Range box should appear - click in Select Data Label Range, then highlight the cells that contain the additional text you want to appear
5. Click OK

Following those steps, and using the source data as per below (highlighting the Product range of cells):
Book1
BCDEFG
2ProductProduct 1Product 2Product 3Product 4Product 5
3Sales15002500175015003000
Sheet1

I got this. Is this the type of thing you're looking for?

Hi,

Thanks for above it is really interesting.
I was hoping to have a separate label set which I could place inside column while having totals at the top.

I wonder if I add a text to a column if I could link this text to such column so that it sticks with it if column changes (e.g. higher/lower).

Thanks,
Nic

Hello Kevin,

Second option "or perhaps more like this?" is exactly was I am looking for!

How would I do this?

Thanks!

Notice the "Dummy" Data? You create a second data series equal to your first "true" data; you include this second series in your chart. You end up with 2 columns side by side.
On one series, add the data labels as per normal (totals) and position them above the columns.
On the other series, add data labels from a range of values on the sheet. Position them within the columns.
Finally, set the "overlap" for the 2 data series to 100%.
