Can I add a new row field which is an aggregate of other fields?

I would like to create a new field in my pivot tables that combines 2 existing text fields in order to include it in the Rows area of my pivot table.

When I use a calculated field, Excel will not let me drag it to the Rows area saying I cannot use it in "that area of the report". When I drag it to the Values area, it wants to sum it or some other mathematical approach (to resolve in to a single value) and I get a #VALUE error in the cells.

I can't imagine this is an unusual thing to want to do, so there's probably an easy way to do it. Ideas?

Thanks,
ann
