I’m running Excel Version 11 and I’m trying to give cell H45 the name “C”. I’m informed: “That name is not valid”. I haven’t used it elsewhere. I’ve used other single letters of the alphabet on other cells with no problem. Can anyone tell me what’s wrong with the letter “C”? If there’s nothing wrong with it, what am I doing wrong?

Excel Facts

Quick Sum
Select a range of cells. The total appears in bottom right of Excel screen. Right-click total to add Max, Min, Count, Average.
You cannot use either R or C as a Name. Not sure why, but it might be because they conflict with R1C1 references.

Solution
Excel has these letters reserved: c, f, r (for some reason some developer reserved them) and you cannot use them as a named range.

But you have 23 other letters you can use.

f isn't reserved

My version is in Spanish, Fila = Row, maybe that's why. 😬
I'll have to try and remember that when answering questions if I suspect anyone has a Spanish version

I think so too but also Excel lets you select the entire row and entire column respectively of the activecell in the Name box using the letters R and C (don't know why as never found a practical use for it, possibly under the bonnet it converts all A1 to R1C1, but I'm only speculating)

My sincere thanks to everyone for their response. In my Version 11, R&C are “reserved”, not F. I’ve never heard of these reserves before. Thank you for the enlightenment.
Cheers

You're welcome happy we could help

Basic rules for named ranges (not extensive)
Names must begin with a letter, an underscore (_), or a backslash (\)
Names can't contain spaces and most punctuation characters.
Names can't conflict with cell references – you can't name a range "A1" or "XFD100".
Single letters are OK for names ("a", "b", "x", etc.), but the letters "r" and "c" are reserved.
Names are not case-sensitive – "home", "HOME", and "HoMe" are all the same to Excel.
A Named Range can be up to 255 characters long.
