sheet 1 has columns "name", "Sprint #" and "data". I have a pivot table that sums the data column based on name and sprint #. I would like sheet 1 to highlight the name when the data column value is changed in such a way that the value in the pivot table is > 5.

for that you probably won't need that pivot table, but you could use a SUMIFS formula in the conditional format of those cells, see these 2 help pages:
