Command buttons changing to pictures?

Similar to my other thread about vba code vanishing I have been having issues with a spreadsheet losing command buttons.

The on load event shows or hides one of these buttons depending on user, so I learn of this when the code crashes at this point. When I view the spreadsheet the offending button has vanished (hence the error) and all the others no longer work and appear to be formatted as pictures, rather than buttons? With this spreadsheet the vba code is still present.

Can anyone explain why this has started happening and what to do to fix it?
