Convert string to searchable text

I'm trying to convert a column of text to something that is findable with the Ctrl-F command. The text in each of the column's entries is a string function: "=LEFT(A1,5)" But when I search that column for something that is clearly there, Excel reports it doesn't exist.

I think I need to format the whole column as text, and I succeeded once, but I can't remember how! Format|Text doesn't work. Can someone help? Thanks.

When you use Ctrl F, make sure you select Look In Values not Formulas
