so after filtering column H for "contra*", i end up with four rows of filtered data (using wild card because there's often many words after that)

header is row 9

filtered data is rows 278, 279, 302, 306

im trying to make a macro so that in column AB, it'll fill "cont" for those specific rows above (ie only the visible, filtered rows, not the entire dataset)

the challenge of course is that the row numbers can change month to month

Excel Facts

Did you know Excel offers Filter by Selection?
Add the AutoFilter icon to the Quick Access Toolbar. Select a cell containing Apple, click AutoFilter, and you will get all rows with Apple
Try:
VBA Code:
Range("AB10", Range("AB" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp)).SpecialCells(xlVisible) = "cont"

Solution
It would be easier to help if you could use the XL2BB add-in (icon in the menu) to attach a screenshot (not a picture) of your sheet. Alternately, you could upload a copy of your file to a free site such as www.box.com or www.dropbox.com. Once you do that, mark it for 'Sharing' and you will be given a link to the file that you can post here. Explain in detail what you want to do referring to specific cells, rows, columns and sheets using a few examples from your data (de-sensitized if necessary).
