Format chart data point - tying to specific cells

I have several data points on an excel chart with a different color. However, then I hide any rows or sort the source data. The colors move to different data points than the ones I assigned.

I had always assumed that each data point was tied to he source data row but it seems to be related to the position in the table.

If anyone knows a way to beat this - I would appreciate it!
