I have a large list of text in a column from which I would like to highlight those items which do not have a hyperlink.

Is it possible to do this using conditional formatting?

Excel Facts

Copy a format multiple times
Select a formatted range. Double-click the Format Painter (left side of Home tab). You can paste formatting multiple times. Esc to stop
Short answer, no.

You have to create a UDF like below. Create a standard module and paste the code:
VBA Code:
Function IsHyperlink(r As Range) As Integer
  IsHyperlink = r.Hyperlinks.Count
End Function
Then you can use UDF like:
Excel Formula:
=IF(IsHyperlink(A1),"LINK","NO LINK")
