Hello,
I have both 2003 and 2007 installed on my computer (I needed that increased row capability of 07) and I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way that you could set the 2003 software to open all files unless the file is 07 format or you manually open the file through 2007? Most of the files i receive are still 2003, but if i just open the file the 2007 software opens. Help!

Best way to learn Power Query?
Read M is for (Data) Monkey book by Ken Puls and Miguel Escobar. It is the complete guide to Power Query.
Hi Kim;

This would not answer your question but might help you somehow!

Couple of years ago, I had a new version of Excel installed on the same computer with an older version. The result was a chaotic performance by Excel!!

MS Professional Tech. Support Group worked on the problem for days and concluded: " ... having 2 versions of Excel on the same computer is the root of the problem ..."
I subsequently uninstalled the 2 Excel versions and re-installed the latest. Problem solved!

Myself and many other members are running both with no adverse effects. I would not uninstall 2007 for just a nuisance -- especially if you need to addtional row capacity from time to time. (That's why I hounded IS until I could get it.)

Right now I'm at home and I don't have Excel installed on this box (yet). Can you do the "normal" fix and to into Windows Explorer | Tools | Options | File Types and edit the XLS extention options? That's what I would try first.

well the files that I am opening are the 2003 version of Excel and they will still pull up the 2007 version; it doesn't seem to matter. It is just such a hassle when you forget and up comes 07 when you really need the 03 version....

You don't set this in the Office software.

It has to do with the file associate defined in your OS.

ASSuMEing you are using windows, open up explorer. You can do it though the menu Tools/Options, but slightly easier if you find an Excel workbook file.

Once you found an Excel workbook file in explorer (with an XLS file extension), right click on it and choose PROPERTIES.

Click the CHANGE button next to OPEN WITH. You probably got it from here but just in case... Scroll down the list of programs and Choose EXCEL (the 2003 version/icon). Make sure you check the box that says something like "Always use this program to open this file type" or whatever nonsense Microsoft made up.

Good luck!
