Excel Facts

Wildcard in VLOOKUP
Use =VLOOKUP("Apple*" to find apple, Apple, or applesauce
Use the REPLACE or SUBSTITUTE functions on it?
There is no problem wrapping functions inside of other functions in Excel.

Why don't you show us an example of exactly what it is you are trying to accomplish.

That link show you how to do exactly what I said (wrapping the function inside of another function).
There is tons of good documentation out there on all the functions which can be found with a simple Google search.
The thing to remember is that the "input" part of ANY function does NOT need to be a hard-coded value - you can substitute any formula that returns a value in its place.

Also, please try to be more detailed in your questions. Remember, while you may be familiar with the data and exactly what you are trying to accomplish, we are not. We only know what you tell us. Often times, showing us a simple example of exactly what it is you are trying to accomplish clarifies it much better than anything else.
