Populate cell from table on separate sheet based on date

Help appreciated! I need to get a cell value on sheet 1 that changes depending on the date entered in A4. The data comes from sheet two, which has dates listed in columns (horizontally) and the data I need to sum in rows beneath the date. I also need to sum totals in 6 month increments (again, dependant on date entered) for another sheet. I've tried SUMIF, INDEX / MATCH and can't get anything to work. Appreciate help. Table example attached.
