Read Data from a Closed Excel File or Workbook without Opening it

This was found by Googling but it seems not correct.

VBA – Read Data from a closed Excel file without Opening it

I was in a forum recently, when I came across a question on how to get or read data from a closed excel workbook (file) without actually opening it.

The line which claims to be Read Only is

' OPEN THE SOURCE EXCEL WORKBOOK IN "READ ONLY MODE".
    Set src = Workbooks.Open("D:\SMv5.xls", True, True)

However on stepping through the code I find it both Opens the workbook and attempts to run code in it.
So - is it at all possible? It's a large workbook that takes ages to open so it'd be simpler to copy the columns I want to Access and read that.

I searched for it a couple days ago as well, and it requires ADO.
