Hi

How do I get an IF statement to handle numbers differently to letters.

EG:

IF(A1=a number, then it does this......
IF(A1=a letter, then it does this.......

Thanks

If I understand the request correctly, I think this normally-entered formula placed in cell K2 and copied down should also work...

=IF(ISTEXT(L2),MAX(K$1:K1)+1,"")

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.

I think you may have missed ..
values in column L are generated by a formula
.. I'm presuming that means all those 'blank' cells in column L are "", which would return True for ISTEXT() & produce a very different result to that shown in the post 4 image.
