Sorting Columns that have merged cells

Below you will see spreadsheet which contains merged cells. Every time I try to sort cell range C13:C20 to try and get the dates in ascending order I get an error message. I am using Excel 2007. I just trying to sort the rows with the start dates within the section in ascending order or is my only option is to cut and paste the rows manually.
