Sum substrings

Is there a way to do this without the use of a macro?

I have strings in cells A1:A20 with both numbers and characters.

Then I want to MID each cell: =MID(A1;5;4) (start at 5th char, take 4 chars) which gives me a 4 digit number. Then I want to sum all digits of A1:A20.

Possible without macro?

Thanks, I had no idea I could MID a whole range! But why can't I use the SUM function?
