i have a wrkbk that i'm trying to do a lookup using a column of cells that have number values. the values are visually left aligned (not formated that way). if i place my cursor in the formula bar and hit ENTER, the lookup works and the # becomes visually right aligned but nothing in formatting is different. WHAT IS GOING ON!??

The column of values that supposedly have number values has actually text as underlying format. Try the following...

(1.) Select an empty/clean cell.
(2.) Activate Edit|Copy.
(3.) Select the cells of the target column.
(4.) Activate Edit|Paste Special >Add.

You should post this type of questions at Excel Questions, not here.
