Word Mail Merge Question

I have a mail merge application that is creating name and address labels which includes the zip code. The data is coming from an Excel spreadsheet and all works well with one exception. One of the zip codes is an east coast zip code that begins with 0. The zip code is 01548.
When the mail merge occurs, the leading zero appears on the mailing label, but the rest of the zip code (1548) does not. It just has 0 as the zip code.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

You can teach Excel a new custom list. Type the list in cells, File, Options, Advanced, Edit Custom Lists, Import, OK
Thank you for the response. However, this article addresses just the opposite of my situation. In my case the leading zero printed but the remaining four digits did not. The field was formatted as text.

I looked at the zip code merge field and there is no formatting being applied. There is no text formatting option that I can see that would apply to zip codes. The only text formatting options are upper case, lower case, first character upper, etc.
just for kicks I added a zero as first character in the address field and the address printed just fine.
