Chart Axis Labels as Symbols

Hello,

I have a bar chart and I want to label the vertical axis labels as symbols.
I have a font icon in which the symbols come from the "private use area" subset of the font. I reference several other parts of the worksheet to these symbols, and it works just fine. However, when I reference the axis label of the bar chart to the symbols, it doesn't display them (it instead displays rectangular boxes).

Is this possible to reference the axis labels as the symbols?
