open excel in calculation manual

how does excel determine if it opens a file in manual or automatic?
how can i choose that excel opens every file in calculation manual?

Rory - does that mean you could just use a purpose built add-in to change the calculation mode when you open up Excel? I don't suppose there's a registry hack to do this (switch calc to manual) is there?

Yes - I do in fact have one that does just that!

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.
If you have a Book.xlt template and set calculation to manual while its open then save it, manual calculation will be the default provided that a blank workbook is opened when you start Excel.

That may not work if you open files from Explorer without Excel already loaded, in my experience. That may be down to a setting in the registry though.
