In Lotus123 one could begin a cell with a "/" and then any text following would be repeated to fill the cell.
i.e. /* = ********** until the cell is filled.
Is there a way to do this in Excel?

What is the shortcut key for Format Selection?
Ctrl+1 (the number one) will open the Format dialog for whatever is selected.
A bit of a cludgy workaround:

Use custom cell formatting with the following: @** and put an asterisk in the cell. Should fill with * across the cell width, even if the width changes.
