I have data across rows in which I want to find the 1st occurance of a non blank cell and return this as a reference.
The formula in col A was kindly provided by Aladin, this finds the last entry, can this be tweaked? I'll be honest and say that I dont't quite understand how it works.

Row 5 should return 2
Row 9 should return 29

But isn't it the same with:

SEARCH("?",$A$2:$A$15)

as it is with

1/(...), 1/(A1:A12<>"") for example?

Both arrays never have values greater than 1?

Excel Facts

Round to nearest half hour?
Use =MROUND(A2,"0:30") to round to nearest half hour. Use =CEILING(A2,"0:30") to round to next half hour.
But isn't it the same with:

SEARCH("?",$A$2:$A$15)

as it is with

1/(...), 1/(A1:A12<>"") for example?

Both arrays never have values greater than 1?

What I'm implying is that we just use:

9.99999999999999E+307

so that there won't be an additional cognitive step in switching from

SEARCH("?",$A$2:$A$15)

to

SEARCH("x",$A$2:$A$15)

when A2:A15 is:

Note. If one wants to be consistent in every case, Grove's 2 needs to be abondoned in favor of:

LOOKUP(9.99999999999999E+307,1/(...),...)

Ok. It does make sense to have one BigNum to use in order to be consistent!

As always, Thanks for the help, Aladin!

Please explain more clearly in which cell address/(s) the above formula needs to be entered?
