Hello there

I have a list of sports fixtures eg Man Utd v Arsenal, Chelsea v spurs etc one below the other. I enter the scores eg Man Utd 0 v 1 Arsenal.

I am looking for a formula this will indicate when a team has won 4 matches in a row. So that as I enter all the results once the 4th consecutive wins for a particular team occurs an X appears to the right of that team indicating a run of 4.

The difficult is that team names may appear on the left and the right.

I would also want a new chain or run to start after the first 4 so that if there were 5 consecutive wins and X would not appear beside the 5th win.

A starting point might be to have a basic If formula to the left or right of each fixture indicating W or L but that's as far far as I can go.

hi, is it possible that you change the format of your data a little?

so, A = Team1, B = Team2, C = Score of Team1, D = Score of T2, E = Winner (blank if a tie), F = Loser (blank if a tie)

so basically, what i'm asking is to convert the score column into two columns. instead of 2:1 to have 2 and 1 separately, and add two more columns with Winner & Loser.

Col A:D will be fixed data.

in E2, type =IF(C2=D2,"",IF(C2>D2,A2,B2)) and copy down
in F2, type =IF(C2=D2,"",IF(C2>D2,B2,A2)) and copy down
in G2, type (entered with array, ctrl+shift+enter). probably can be optimized a little..

and copy down. this will check that the team won 4 times (w/o losing) and make sure its exactly the 4th, not the 5th, win. puts an "X" in Col G whenever that's the case.

Thanks for taking an interest. I'm not very good at post form Excel directly but sulakvea's sample above is the right idea. There is a long list of matches with scores being entered. For some reason when I copy his formula in I am getting the error message and was wondering if there was a wee flaw in it. so I can't really test it out

I think your formula is looking for 3 wins in adjacent cells. The difficult is that the matches FAD plays in are not all together.

you are right - for some reason (at work) i am getting the same error. however, it worked fine at home last night, and obviously both me and excel Jeannie pasted the formula from a working sheet. not sure what happened, the only difference between here and home is the version of Excel i use. will look into it tonight

I think you may have slightly exceeded excel the 2003 limit of 7 nested functions.
