active cell indicator does not move

OK, I have an strange one here...

I can use the arrows and move around, the name box indicates this. However, the heavy black outline that indicates the selected cell remains in cell A1. Even when I change worksheets, the outline indicator of A1 in the main sheet ghosts over the current worksheet. If I double-click in a cell, I can enter data in that cell. Scroll lock is turned off.

I'm guessing that I accidentally invoked some obscure keyboard/mouse combination and put Excel in the twilight zone. Any ideas? It's driving me batty.
