Add "watermark" behind group of cells

I need to add a "watermark" to my excel spreadsheet behind a group of cells. The image will inform users a certain group of cells will be completed after a certain date. As such, I need the cells to still be editable. WordArt won't work because it overlays the cells and is clickable. I tried locking the WordArt object, which works beautifully for preventing the object from being clicked, but also prevents me from selecting the cells underneath the object.

Any thoughts?
