Adding Minutes and seconds

Trying to get a total of minutes and seconds.
When I add the following.......
2997:22
465:03
516:44
I'm getting 3978:69
When the answer should be 3979:09
The question is how do I get the :69 to change to a full minute and 9 secs

Do I need to format the cell in anyway

How are you entering the numbers?
How are the numbers formatted?
Ensure that the numbers are recorded as time and since you want minutes not hours format the time
with custom format [mm]:ss
