adding numbers to a cell

Prior to Excel 2002, if you entered a single number in a cell (without using a + or = sign) and later needed to add an additional number all you had to do was click the check mark on the formula entry line and it automatically added an = sign before the number. This made adding an additional number a pretty quick process. Excel 2002 does not have this very useful feature. Any ideas?
