Adding values of data validated column?

Heres what I want to do: I want to add up some of the values of a column that are on another sheet but ONLY if the cell with the value has been validated by a cell in different column on that same sheet. The list of cells is quite long. It seems that it would be the sumproduct function but I'm not sure and can't seem to get the thing to work. Any Ideas?

What do you mean by validated?

Well,
On one sheet I have a column with a long list of numbers (column A) and several column to the right (column E), each of the corresponding cells have a drop down list. If i select the item on the drop down list which reads "Cost Committed in WIP" , I would like for a cell on another sheet to add ONLY the numbers in column A that have the corresponding cell in column E with "Cost Committed in WIP" selected. Is that doable? (and THANK YOU for responding!)

You can do it wo ways:
If you just one to add one at a time and one cell on Sheet 2 is connect to one cell in Sheet1 try:
=IF(Sheet1!E1="Cost Committed in WIP",Sheet1!A1,"")
copy down

but if you need to summarize all values from A when your values in E are equal to "Cost Committed in WIP" try:

=SUMIF(Sheet1!$E$1:$E$8,"Cost Committed in WIP",Sheet1!$A$1:$A$8)
