Alternate Row Color

Hi I want to alternate row colors, but only change add the formating when a new row of data is entered.

The date will be entered starting at Column A and ending at column F.

I found this

=mod(row(),2)=1

But I must select all the rows to have the conditional formating apply. I want this formula to only work if the value starting at A3 is non blank.

Any help is great.
