Array woes

Hello,
I have never used an array formula but I find myself now having to utilize them. What I am trying to do is to take a value and see if there is any diffence and if there is to have a numerical value entered that signifies that there is a change. Since the change is between zoning codes and the it is text instead of number values, my dilemma begins. ex. if r-1 does not equal r-2 = 1, if r-1=r-1 then 0

Well....I figured out the formula and now I just need to find a sign that designates a not equal sign.....could not find one in the functions fields.

ex. IF(R1 not equal R2,1) , the entering of the not equal does not seem to work though. If you could clue me into what this simple function is and where I could find it would be a great help....thanks kent

i FOUND THE <> BUT THE FORMULA IS STILL NOT WORKING I AM POSTING IT BELOW FOR YOU TO LOOK AT

=IF(Q2=R2,0),IF(Q2<>R2,1)
