Back again formula issues

hi again yrying to snaz things up at work on a excel workbook i have to enter a part number and thenthe spec there are 18 parts and only 1 of those has a different spec so what i wanted to do was if the cell is x in the other cell put a and if not x put b i tryed the IF function but keeps coming up #VALUE if its possible let me know if not no biggie
